HISTORY SHOWS REASONABLE MAY NOT BE SO REASONABLE

Your assessment of armed resistance and its potential impact on society is flawed. Resistance movements in both Cuba and Northern Ireland have proved that even a small number of ideologically motivated and armed people have a tremendous impact on a society. Less than a thousand IRA members have kept the resources of the United Kingdom at bay for a century, so much for James Bond, British Army, MI-6, RAF and all those British nuclear weapons.

You say that you think that disarming Americans is inadvisable yet you support registration, however history has proven time and time again that registration is tantamount to confiscation. New York City, Washington D.C., California, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia the list goes on and on. Registration is always followed with confiscation, despite the echoing promises in each of the cases above.   Will the felons register their guns?  Why would they?  It is already illegal for them to own guns.

You also propose what would amount to not only a massive governmental intrusion into private citizen’s lives, but the expense of running such a monstrous system would be unbelievable. Would you want the gun IRS to come and give you an audit, where you are guilty until proven innocent?

The Brady Bill was supposed to stop all kinds of criminals from acquiring weapons, and while the Clinton administrations says that it has stopped hundreds of thousands from getting guns, but only seven people were prosecuted under the law last year! A system that has cost tens of millions of dollars each year and has inconvenienced thousands of honest citizens has taken whopping seven criminals off the street! Why is the Clinton administration screaming form more gun control laws when the laws they have are not used?

If were willing to spend that kind of money then I have a few ideas we should consider:

Why not have government inspectors check every photo made for child pornography? Why not have a breathalyzer installed in every car? Why not limit every car to 55 mph? Let's have a governmental food card that records what you eat, after all we know that limiting fast food will prevent heart disease.

There are some very real ways to limit gun violence, and they start by enforcing the large number of gun laws currently on the books. The average drug/gang or career criminal will commit on average 53 reported felonies before they are caught! A very small group of people commit the majority of violent crimes in America, it only makes sense to get these violent people put away for as long as possible. Due to our over worked court system 5-10 gun related felonies are routinely overlooked and never prosecuted on an average gun crime. It makes sense to lock up the true perpetrators not to harass innocent citizens.
